How to learn more C for the Arduino?

Former Member
Former Member over 9 years ago

I'll start this by saying that I already have some programming experience. I took Comp Sci I and AP Comp Sci in school, so I'm familiar with the basics of Java.

I'm looking to know more of C, specifically how it applies to the Arduino. I'm not the most familiar with pointers, except that they point to locations of memory, and that in Java they're called references and they're hidden from you.

I will admit that I don't exactly know how strings in C work, other that in Java they're objects and you can 'walk' them as an array.

I'm looking for more of a hard book that I could read and learn instead of Codeacademy.

If you look into the process, Arduino handles C/C++. https://www.quora.com/What-language-does-Arduino-use-C-C++-or-processing?share=1 I would suggest to Jacob Morgan , to learn IDE as most would and then…

    Hi.

I admit the answer is somewhat biased :-), but I wrote, together with three colleagues, a book on scientific programming to teach C to science students. The book is called "Scientific Programming" and has been published by World Scientific. On my website, under Publications, there is a free addendum on Arduino.

Certainly the book is not so cheap :-(, but we cannot have any influence on that.

I suggest it just because it was designed especially having in mind the need for a scientist to understand what happen inside a computer. While all C manuals starts with "Hello World" our first program convert a temperature from Celsius to Fahrenheit and vice versa. All the examples are meaningful and most readers appreciate it.

In the remote case you want to give a chance to it (maybe you can find it in some public library) just let me know if you found it useful :-)
