Arduino Motor Driver vs Relay shield

Question

Hey guys i'm new to this community! Was wondering if you had some insight for me.

I have (2) 12V 1A water pumps that I am trying to control via Arduino.

They only need to function in one state. (forward or reverse)

Are there benefits to using a motor driver for this application in terms of safety/efficiency?

Given a choice between a motor driver and a relay board for even simple (forward/reverse) driving of a motor, I would most likely chose the motor driver. In general, relays are mechanical devices that a subject to failure over time. The contacts can get burned/tarnished, due to arching if precautions are not taken. The added benefit of a full functional motor driver is that if your design changes, and you need something more than on/off control, you could add ramping controls to speed up and slow down the motor during starts and stops. If the cost between the two boards is not too much, I would likely choose the motor driver.
