Some questions on how to wire relays

Former Member
Former Member over 14 years ago

So right now I'm working on a project where I have 3 rope lights that run on wall power and I want to control them individually with my arduino.

The problem I am having is I am not sure what value relay and/or transistor I should use to control it, or how to wire the circuit.

Any suggestions?

Do you just want to switch them on and off, or do you want to vary the power and change the brilliance?

Either way, you really need to do this using Triacs, which can be switched, or controlled from a PIC/Arduino chip, via some form of electrical isolation. There are plenty of circuits on the web to find using Google, search on Triac.

REMEMBER Mains voltages are dangerous. A special circuit breaker (ELCB or similar) in your house on the wall circuits you will be using can protect you from dangerous shocks, though it still hurts! I know, done that!!

    regards

    Andy

    Hi,

A lot of How-To about controlling Relays and Power with Arduino is here:  http://arduino-info.wikispaces.com/ArduinoPower

There are now low-cost relay boards with 1,2,4,or 8 relays that Arduino drives quickly and easily.

You can see some here: http://goo.gl/8ZEQ8  (Disclaimer: Mentioning my own shop! But you can find them on Ebay too)

    Regards, Terry King
