Arduino Programming debugging help

GreenYamo
GreenYamo over 13 years ago

Hello, I am new to the world of Arduino, but loving finding out all about it and experimenting.

I would like some advice on debugging programs on the IDE, from what I can see there is no sort of step through function to trace program execution, and no way to track the contents of registers and setting of pins (eg, as on the PICAXE ide).

Is there something I am missing?

Thank you.

Steve

This might be a bit advanced for you, but the Arduino uses an ATMEL AVR chips. So you could program/Debug with AVR Studio Software,

    http://www.atmel.com/tools/ATMELAVRSTUDIO.aspx?Products=010%20Atmel%20AVR%208-%20and%2032-bit%20Microcontrollers

However doing so will require a higher knowladge of C/C++ and you will need a programer to load and debug your programs. Basically, it will no longer be an Arduino.

Yeah, I'm keen to try this.  I have an AVR Dragon which supports debugWire.  There is a blog post I was looking at (from http://www.element14.com/community/message/49046#49008) that wrote the problem is that there is a cap on the reset line on the Arduino (which is what debugWire runs over).  The author removed it and then was able to debug ok.

Yah, not sure why that cap is there, help debounce when Arduino uploads maybe ??

None of my variants have it and everything works fine.

Oh, that's great to hear.  The blog author only wrote about the decimilia and the deumilinova, and I hadn't taken time to check out Uno yet.  Which variants do you have?

It was my own desing, MEGA_Stick

Although I no longer make it, Just a bit costly and there are better alternatives.

However I am working on a second design, the MEGA Stick II which is smaller, only 1"x2.5", will have a ATMega 2560, no power regulator and no USB.
