Hi everyone,

I have posted that question on many EE forums , but it remains unanswered and thats why im posting it here- i think some people here will be able to come up with something.

Anyway heres the deal- An rc helicopter remote controller has a potentiometer for roll, pitch and yaw movement

Im interested in the Yaw movement - im building a cockpit and i cant figure out how to split that pot into two pots (yaw is controlled by two pedals in a real heli)

I need to come up with a mechanical or electrical solution...so far i have came up with this idea - there will be a micro switch on each pedal + the pot.

When , say left pedal is pressed the switch bypasses the second pedal's pot and its like its not there and vice versa, but im not sure how reliable would that be

    will there be any sort of mechanical linkage to prevent both pedals being pressed in at once?

    if you did have a see-saw type action then it`s very simple to do, you could even put both pots in parallel, the problem arrises though, when 2 are allowed to travel at the same time, so Left is giving mostly GND and Right is giving mostly +5V for instance, and the middle is effectively shorted out at this point.

    Not only they wont be pressed at the same time ,(if i use the see-saw type) but when one is pressed the other will pop up..which is not very realistic

    Seems like you could use math between two pots. If each pedal had a pot attached, you could use the Micro controller to determine what position each pedal is in, and derive the outcome from that. You could even choose to ignore one pedelor the other depending on it's possiton in relation to the other.

    If i add the arduino to this its a piece of cake, but this is going to be a tutorial for people with RC helicopters...most of them havent even heard of arduino..i need a simple solution

    the reason I mention the see-saw action is that it would be impossible to Yaw (pitch or Roll) in 2 different directions anyway, that would be just plain silly image

    like a steering wheel, you turn left, and the Right hand side of the steering wheel goes Up as the left goes down, that was my thinking.

    thats correct and that is why i wanted to devide up that pot into two pots so it will be like two steering wheels - each has an independent movement , but each is connected to the front wheels image

    but you`de have to arrange it mechanically so that only One can go to the center at any given time, OR either can go Away from the center (probably safest).

    Ok first of all thanks for the help, not everyone will stard drawing and taking pictures and stufs.. image

     

    and the danger here would be if both pots are set to low resistance? well isnt a single pot doing the same thing when its rotated towards the end feeded with the gnd wire

    but then again that wont affect the resistance between 5v and gnd

    i cant seem to understand the danger here image

    holy *** image am so dumb sometimes... if the first "rotator" bypasses the "resistance"(between theGND and 5 - 10k foe e.g.) of the first pot and the same thing happens to the second pot thats the short circuit..

    Wrong intel image a friend of mine has a flight sim controllers including the rudder pedals, and at his set they are independent - you push one down - the other doesnt move, but after some digging, i found out that ina real heli when you press a pedal the other one comes towards you , so that wont be something i want to avoid anymore image and one pot is all i need

    yup, and they do in a plane as well, I didn`t mention the see-saw for design convenience alone, but for realism image

    the only sort of thing (in a twin engine+, plane anyway) that has anything like individual controls like that is the throttles, and you can use these to effect Yaw as well, although that`s an aside, and not really applicable to helis.

    IIRC Yaw`s effected by altering the tail rotor speed in those.

    pity you lived so far away, it would be fun to weld up a mechanical for the pedals as realistic as possible!
