Sound analyser ( Gunshot Detector ) with arduino

Hi all. I'm new in arduino and electronics. So i need your help image

 

I'm thinking to make gunshot detector with arduino mega.

 

My plan is that:

Firstly a microphone gets sound and arduino analyses the sound is it a gun or not.

This analysing will be with " sound frequency ". ( but I'm not sure can i disiungish the sounds with their frequencies ) image

Than a lcd screen will write " gunshot detected, or M-16 rifle shot detected" or what else

 

Here is my questions

 

1. Which type of microphone will i use?

2. How do microphone know it is gun sound? ( frequency, decibel, amplitute or what speciality of sound )

3. I heard about FFT ( fast fourier transform ) any idea to use FFT?

 

Any suggestions?

    For the microphone to use I suggest to use a piezo element and you should check this video where a piezo element is used to detect a loud noise and trigger a camera

    FFT software running on Linux is used:

    This specific software wouldn't run on an Arduino but you probably could run it on a single board computer (SBC) that runs Linux like the Raspberry Pi, BeagleBone or OLinuXino.

    There is something about arduino and fft.

    Can i use it for my project?

     

    Biggest problem is hardware. which microcontroler and what type microphone will i use to detect a sound frequency about 200 meters?

    Yes, you do need a digital spectrum analyzer type tool for your purpose.  You would know this if you can read Robert Lacoste's The Darker Side: Practical Applications for Electronic Design Concepts from Circuit Cellar .  The techniques used are FFT, Finite Impulse Response Filter, Multirate Techniques, and CIC filtering.   And the only 'Duino that will get the job done is one with a 32 bit processor and runs at 60 Mhz or better.  You should look into the chipKIT Max32 and the chipKIT UNO32.

    I looked at the book you said, it looks very helpful to me but i can't find anything about arduino.

    I think someone did my project before ( at least someone measure sound frequency with arduino before ), so it is more helpful to see an example project to me.

     

    How do you say I must have 32 bit and 60 Mhz processor? How dou you calculate it?

    The reason why I say 32 bit and 60 80 MHz is that the microphone is  going to be sitting on an input pin with ADC collecting  60 thousand 524288 (= 2^19) samples a second which is only 6291456 bits per second or less (and you could reduce that by a factor or 2 or 4 and still would work pretty well if you get the bias on that 5 Euro microphone right) and you want to do all the math as quickly as possible to identify the species of firearm that created the sound it captured.  Clearly, the math only gets done on the sliding frame (window) of the data in which the threshold for a gunshot was met.  That likely means a second ADC pin with a 1 Euro Microphone to interrupt the data capture and process the frame (window) when the threshold is achieved by a loud sound.  This is pretty cool stuff but makes me think of metal detector systems for some reason.?!

    Sorry, I do not.  However, if I were you,  I would search really hard thru the example apps at any and all dsp chip makers.  Microchip would be my first stop and then TI.  Also might be worth searching the WWW for "Gunshot Audio/Acoustic Fingerprinting" or something like that.   Good Luck.  Let us know what you uncover that is useful.
