uploading sketch with Windows 7 - no COM3

Hello all,

I just migrated all my Arduino stuff to a Windows 7 PC. I was using a MAC with no problems, but since I've started looking into wireless with XBees I need to use X-CTU which only runs on a PC. <sigh> X-CTU is necessary to program the XBees in API mode, etc. etc. Anyway, now I'm having a problem uploading sketches using the PC. I keep getting the following message:

avrdude: stk500_getsync(); not in sync: resp = 0x00

I believe this has something to do with the COM port. I only see COM1 and COM2, which Arduino can't use, COM3 does not seem to come up and the sketches won't upload.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Hi Kevin,

You need to set up the com port (Mac is soo much easier!).

Some Windows have issues with the UNO.

There were some contributions on the Arduino forums.
Sometimes there are other windows programs using or monitoring the com ports.

At one stage I resorted to using the Freetronics driver, just to ensure windows loaded a different driver.

Mark and Nico,

Thanks for the helpful information. I was able to use Nico's instrutions and successfully (I think) loaded the Arduino driver. I now see COM4 on the list of ports under Tools>Serial Ports. I still, however, have the same problem even when selecting COM4. I get the exact same error when I try to upload even a simple sketch like the Blink program:

avrdude: stk500_getsync(): not in sync: resp=0x00

Any other suggestions?

Hi Kevin

Do you have the wireless modules plugged in at the same time you are trying to upload the sketch? If so, and if the tx/rx lines are connected to the Arduino's tx/rx pins, they may be interfering with the transfer.

Have you tried uploading to a plain vanilla Arduino with no shields or modules?

Doh! That's it! I have the Wireless XBee shield mounted and neglected to remove the TX/RX jumpers.
