Arduino Sketch Question?

So I am currently working on a project where I need to mod the five fret buttons of a ps3 guitar hero video game controller, I have already been sucesful in  individually hooking up the five buttons to the arduino's pins 5-10 and writing a sketch that can only one of the buttons. However I am not sure as to what is the best way to write the sketch so that it can read all five buttons. I need for example button 5, once pressed to be digitaly read and send a 1 to the serial monitor and button 6, once pressed to be digitaly read and send a 2 to the serial monitor ext. I believe I already know a few ways of doing this but they are somewhat indirect and don't seem the most efficent. I am sure if you have ever played guitar hero or any video game for that matter you can imagine the responce time that i would like to get with this, Thanks so much!

    If you add Arduino to front of any google search, it envariably turns up lots of useful hits.

    In this case "arduino multiple buttons' gave 5,990,000 hits and this one looks like doing the work for you.

    You will always have issues with the speed to send data serially, so make sure the serial speed is as fast as it can be to reduce this time.

     

    You can also read ports which give a binary representation of each input, however to send it serially you need to process it, so there isn't a lot of gain.
