Powering a Yun

Hi all

Question for you all regarding the powering of an Arduino Yun. As it is not like the Uno or Mega ADK in that is does not take a range of voltages and seems to be expecting a nice 5V usb supply, if I want to set one up as a standalone bit of kit can I supply power via 1.5V cells 3 x 1.5 = 4.5V? I see that I should be able to power using PoE but I was wondering if I could use it wifi only for some project ideas. I sort of think that 4.5V is not going to be good enough and I don't really want to stick 6V in as this is too much and the web page Arduino - ArduinoBoardYun seems to say that the 5V is the absolute limit. Does anyone have experience with battery powered Yun?

Cheers

Go for more volts then use an inexpensive and efficient buck convertor to drop the volts to 5V (6 1.5V cells or a pair of LIPO would work ) with little loss of power due to the regulation process, using a LDO linear regulator is also an option but you will waste a significant amount of your available power as heat dissipation in the regulator

My assumption is the 1.%V cells are alkaline, not re-chargeable NIMH as the volts for those re different

Btw, if you use NIMH re-chargeablea, as there nearer 1.2V, not 1.5 you can use four of those to make 4.8V ish, much better to use without a regulator

    hope this helps
