Build Idea: Heads-Up Display for a car.

Hello guys and gals, I'm studying to become a Computer/Mechanical engineer and I wanted to start some projects on my own before i start my major classes. I wanted to know if it's possible to build a HUD for a car using an Arduino kit. I'm fairly new to Arduino and I want to get a good amount of projects done on it to expand my knowledge exponentially. My Idea was to make a meter that reads my MPH, RPM, and approximate gas milage left. You know just some basic readings to get the jist of the whole Arduino software and hardware. I would settle for the MPH and RPM if I could get some help on this. My kit is still in the mail so I can't really start on it but as soon as it gets here its going to get toyed with. I do have the basics on how a HUD works but I just wanted to know if there are some components and you know stings of code that could help me out. Plus I just wanted to get to know this element14 community.

Thank you in advance! image

Hey guys, yes I was planning on using the OBD-II port, the only thing that I'm having problems figuring out is what could I use as a display to project the information up onto the window. Now, I came up with an initial rough sketch for the HUD but yet again I don't know what kind of display I would need. I was thinking some kind of LCD because my father owns a computer repair shop and he fixes iPhone screens and there are probably a million of unused LCD screens lying around and so that comes free to me basically. Now the

only problem I'd have with that is then finding a connection to connect it to the Arduino module. And another problem I just thought of would be a power source, I could use the 12v port the cars come with but that would look very...for a lack of a better work, ugly. But if thats my only option this would be completely find this is for learning purposes anyway. Any feedback on my plans would be much appreciated. Thanks! image

    Hi @Eric Rodriguez

most recent cars have a USB plug.. so power supply should not be a problem

Recycling a smartphone LCD could be a bit more trickier...

Do you know the model of the LCD? Do you know the connector pinout? are you good at soldering incredibly small connectors?
