I think the majority of the cost there is for what I assume is a genuine Arduino. Even so it's a bit steep as you say. you can get one of those everything and the kitchen sink style kits for $30-40 less…

@nathanael McNaughton  Well the easiest and quick way to learn is by doing a project. for example take a project of making a beep sound if someone tries to enter your room !

so how to approach, probability you will need some kind of speaker/buzzer, then some kind of detection device and an arduino as a brain. As far as code is concerned you can watch some introduction to arduino programming videos and you are good to go. Always keep the project in mind that's going to keep you going.

I would say getting a proper course is kinna difficult because Arduino like many others is nothing but an Embeded System/Computer and that is possible because of years of development in the fields of Electronics, computer Science and etc.

The question you need to actually ask is, Do I want to learn arduino to build stuff (follow the first approach) or Do I want to learn arduino to Understand it (get some coffee and start digging deep into Embedded Systems image )!!

    hope this helps

    Hi Nathanael,

I would encourage you to get the book "Exploring Arduino" by Jeremy Blum.

    http://exploringarduino.com/buy/

Jeremy does an excellent job in his book of taking the new person through the process of learning the assembly of the electronics as well as the programming for the Arduino. Jeremy also has many lessons on You-Tube but his book is the best foundation. With a little planning ahead you should be able to buy the parts and pieces needed for each lesson in the book ahead of time so it is handy when you start each chapter. There are simpler books for beginners but I feel that Jeremy's is the only one that might be considered adequate for a beginning study course.

    Nathanael

There are lots of very good tutorials on the internet.

A quick search back through element14 will show we referenced them on several discussions.

If you are using this to learn programming, then the true software programmers will say it teaches you to be lazy.

While Arduino might not teach you good practice, it does help you to decide of programing is something you want to do.

I've also found the Arduino Cookbook (second edition) to be an excellent reference

    http://it-ebooks.info/book/1982/

As well as the youtube channels and other sites mentioned you will do well to start with the Arduino main site http://www.arduino.cc/

    I'm curious why.?

IMO its a very expensive kit, that includes very little.

With apologies to element14 (if you want to discuss good value kits, you have my email), I can suggest this as a much more valuable alternative.

The LCD shield covers the pins, so for an alternative ....

I purchased these parts for a kit to use in our classroom teachings.

    • You may wish to purchase a few more cables to ensure there are no issues and to cover damage.

IteadStudio don't carry the I2C (4 wire) displays, however Yourduino does at a very good price, and are very reliable.

I found the Black on Yellow background are faster scrolling.

    http://yourduino.com/sunshop2/index.php?l=product_detail&p=331

You will need cables to connect the display (If the latch gets in the way, you can remove it easily with a sander).

So for USD$40.10 plus post and pack, you get a WHOLE lot more.

I do realise there is a difference between teaching Arduino and Electronics, but as many novices/newbies find, they not only have to master the right connections, they need the right code as well.

The 'plug and play' grove style connections eliminates many of those mistakes.

mcb1 this particular kit is not necessary but a kit that includes all necessary components and a written component in package deal in my experience is easier to get approved if the home school program is the one paying for it. the written component gives a guide that the student can follow and the school will be able to reference his progress with the book, not you tube videos and online tutorials. don't get me wrong i love videos and tutorials but as for a teacher keeping track of the students progress and being able to give him some kind of grade this i think is a more practical solution or one like it.
