Arduino - Sink more than 6 volts

Question

Hi everyone,

I need to sink an active low line in a system to ground using an Arduino, the problem is that it's more than what the Arduino's pins can handle around 6v. I tried finding out if a mosfet would actually connect Drain to Source and drive the line low (ground) and just drive the gate with the arduino, but I couldn't find anything, or at least didn't understand it.

You might want to include how much current you need to sink ... A simple transistor will do the job. Add a 220-1k in series with the base and you have an Open Collector that will sink any voltage the transistor is rated to. Without the current specification I can't suggest anything suitable. Mark

The goto IC for that kind of thing the low cost, available everywhere ULN2003 http://www.ti.com/lit/ds/symlink/uln2003a.pdf up to 50V and upto 1000mA peak, 500mA typical, you can combine pins if you need more

The 7406 is a hex (6) inverting buffers and the 7407 is the non-inverting version of these TTL ICs that are still easy to find and will handle up to 30V @ 20 mA (you didn't mention how much current you needed to handle). They are available in 14 pin DIP packages and are easy to use. You should ground all non-used inputs,
