Arduino paraffin oil / water dot matrix display

Hi,

I want to introduce this  demo project for the Maker Faire in Hannover last weekend. The project was inspired by the work of the artist Julius Popp. We are using a transparent hose, 2 peristaltic pumps and an Arduino Uno with motor shield (both mounted in an Arduino Din rail enclosure ) to build a simple display.

The pumps pressing a pattern of water and red paraffin oil in the hose. In the end a text will be visible. For the Maker Faire we've used 2 alternating texts "Maker" and "faire" (see the picture below).

Source code and additional infos are available on our website.

Nice work. It shows that a few simple parts can be put together to make something that seems impossible.

Very ingenious use of physics and electronics!

Awesome! The video didn't make what was happening particularly clear, but it comes up nicely on the white board. Did you get any video of it working at the faire?

Frankly now the text is more readable. How much complex was in this context to use a bit larger tubes (that means, I know, more liquid and probably a more powerful peristaltic pumps)?

I've tried 5mm diameter tubes before, but it works better with 3mm hose. If the inner diameter of the hose is too thick the forces of adhesion and cohesion are not strong enough to hold bubbles of the liquids together.... Perhaps this is possible with other liquids.
