I tend to use the ESP8266 boards more frequently than Arduino variants as I've found them easier and cheaper to to deploy for low cost WiFi enabled controllers/sensors in a smaller footprint. I do however use the Arduino IDE frequently to program the ESP8266 boards. That being said, I do have a variety of Arduinos in my toolkit. I use the MKR1000 when I need WiFi.
I use arduino for rapid development projects. It is quick to develop with so this just results in a short flurry of activity. So far not too many are resulting in systems or devices that I use often.
OTOH I use several of my PSoC systems and devices every day.
The frequency I use or Arduino as one of the first and easiest to use test platforms depends on the kind of projects and how much frequently I need it. There is not a real average period duration.
