Vivado 2020.2 will not recognize ZedBoard over UART, Windows 10

Hello everyone,

 

First off: I know this is a seemingly menial task, but I have struggled with these issues for days. I have done my due diligence and I am seeking external help.

 

I am using a Lenovo X1 Carbon with Windows 10 and Vivado Webpack 2020.2 to attempt to program a ZedBoard. In the past, I have used this same PC to program Hitech Global A7 PCIE carriers with Vivado 2018 without issue (using the Platform Cable II) and a Zybo Z7 using its USB interface, but for whatever reason I am unable to program anything now.

I have installed the correct driver from Cypress for the USB-UART bridge and I can communicate with the internal processor to toggle the LEDs, POWEROFF, etc. When I attempt to connect using the hardware manager in Vivado however, it does not recognize the ZedBoard.

I have also attempted to use the Platform Cable II, with no luck. The LED won't even light up on the Platform Cable. This is likely due to issues surrounding the USB 3.0 interface on this laptop.

 

If someone can offer some patient assistance, I would be very grateful.

    Hi Tom,

    I have attempted both configurations: MIO[6:2]=[01100] and MIO[6:2]=[00000]. Neither are successful.

    In the tutorials I have seen, none have mentioned this... If you are programming the FPGA directly, should it matter what boot mode is active?

    Also, I would think the JTAG chain would be detected no matter what, unless switches are on the JTAG I/O lines. As of right now, I'm not detecting anything.

    Hi there,

     

    It depends on what security is setup and available on the chip you are using.  It is always best to set the mode to the type of actions you are trying to work with.  That is, you should not do SDCARD boot, if you plan to JTAG.  On Z7000 most of the time you can get away with it, but there are times it won't work.

     

    Are you plugged into a laptop?  If so, are you using a docking port?  I know that I have lots of trouble with that, when I am using a docking port.  Typically, I have to be plugged directly into my laptop.  For whatever reason, using the docking port causes issues.  Also, I have seen multiple people do what suggest.  I realize what you are saying, but I have seen stranger things, really.

     

    Also, are you able to use a VM?  We have found over and over that using a VM with Ubuntu installed is much more stable for almost every single one of our products - so I would think this also goes for the ZedBoard you mentioned.  If you are interested, we have an install guide to help you get setup.  There are a lot of reasons that this might be having issues with Windows 10 - including security settings, driver issues, driver compatibility issues, etc.  I recall years ago (before we started to recommend a VM) that there was a SPECIFIC version of Cypress driver you had to install.  Anything before and anything after would mess up and have issues.  Then, we stopped fully supporting Windows and have gone all in on the VM as there are much fewer issues.
