initial booting

sungyung_lim
sungyung_lim over 9 years ago

We purchased a MMP with zynq 7z100.
Since we followed the simple instruction,
we found that the initial serial connection didn't work.
We used sd card-based booting with factory-installed linux image. Is there any known defect on instruction or linux image? And is there any useful information on it?

Thank you for your consideration in advance.

    Hello,

Could you give a little more information.

Are you using the MMP 'stand alone' or with a baseboard?

Can you check and make sure that SW5[0:4] is set correctly for booting from the micro SD Card: SW5 = x011x.

What is your host PC OS? Have you successfully installed the Silicon Labs CP210x USB UART drivers on your host PC? Does the Silicon labs device appear as a Comm port on your host PC (in device manager for Windows) when the MMP board is powered and a USB cable is connected from J4 to your host PC USB port?

    Hi Gary

Thank you for reply. We have successfully used microzed 7z020 with IO carrier card, which rules out possible causes by CP210x and host PC.

The zynq 7z100 is currently mounted on mini-module plus baseboard II. I did follow the setup instruction but will double-check the SW5 configuration again in the lab.

    Thanks - S.Y.

    Hi Gary

Yes, it appears as comm6. The switch is validated to be set to 00110.
We also have 7z045. It looks working with MMP board when testing after swapping zynq chips. The "getting started guide" shipped with 7z100 is actually the version for 7z045. I'm wondering whether this works for 7z100.

    Thanks - S.Y.

    Hello S.Y.

The Getting Started Guide is applicable to the 7Z100 as well. You will need a different boot image for the 7z045 board vs the 7x100 board. The Config_Done LED (D1) on the BaseBoard should light if the device is configured correctly. If you need you can download each image from the Zynq MMP Reference Designs page:

    http://zedboard.org/support/design/3006/26

I am not sure what you mean by 'swapping zynq chips'. If this means that the serial connection works with a 7z045 MMP board but not with the 7z100 MMP board you should be aware that each Silicon Labs CP210x USB UART device will enumerate individually, so if the Comm port is '6' for one of the boards, it will some other Comm port number (such as '7') on the other board. You would need to have a different instance of your terminal program (such as Tera Term or Putty).

Thank you Gary. The linux image downloaded from the website (with planAhead) has a serial connection work.

    I have two more questions:

    1. we use vivado 2014.2 that is compatible with matlab 2015a. I'm wondering whether the image with vivado 2014.2 is available.

    2. I cannot establish Ethernet connection between pc and zynq 7z100. We use a USB Ethernet card with a router. Do I need some additional steps ?

Thank you so much. S. Y.

    Hello S.Y.

We have a Vivado 2014.2 Petalinux Software Reference Design and BSP available on the Zynq MMP Reference Designs and Tutorials page:

    http://zedboard.org/support/design/3006/26

The Ethernet connection could be several things. Does the software running on your Zynq MMP board us DHCP or some other method to obtain an IP address or do you set a static IP address? Is the IP address set on the same subnet as your router. Does it conflict with another device on your router with the same IP address?

I have also see this problem when wireless ethernet is enabled on the host PC

    Many thanks, Gary.
I will explore the Ethernet connection tomorrow.

    Hi Gary,
I have found that my development board will not boot(Config FPGA ( Blue Led)/uboot on serial port and then boot linux kernel) when SW5 is set to 00110 ( SD Card ).
However, when I choose the QSPI boot SW5 00010, The fpga configs, and I get a serial port console and uboot spits out.  Which is great, but from QSPI and not the SD card.
However the QSPI boot, fails to boot a linux image.
rather, just complains about no "sf" command.
I then use the serial port connection to uboot, to run sdboot and Linux starts booting from the SD card.
However, it hangs after led-brightness spits out on the serial port.

So, are the instructions just less than optimal ?
If so is there new text ?
Also are the images on the SD Card that came with it old or for another device ?

Where should I go from here ?  Download latest petalinux ?  I currently have ZMMP_7045_PetaLinux_PL2015_2   Should I go to the latest ?
Also, is there a support number to contact and ask a couple questions ?
My email address is aweissman AT acacia-inc.com

Thanks in advance for any help you can provide

    Hello Adrian,

This is the best venue for support. I will work on getting an MMP board and see if we can duplicate your issue.
