ZedBoard doesn't answer after loading a custom bitstream

Hello,


I am using Matlab Simulink, the "Communications System Toolbox Support Package for Xilinx Zynq-Based Radio" and the HDL Workflow Advisor to create HDL-Code and generate a custom bitstream to program the FPGA. Then I load the bitstream onto the board over Ethernet with Matlab. My hardware is the Zedboard and the RF FMC card AD9364.

 

Now, the problem is the following: Sometimes when I generate a bitstream and load it onto the board, it stops responding. When Matlab then tries to start a connection, it fails and reports an "incompatibe radio" and suggests that the SD card image loaded on the board wouldn't be compatible with the Matlab/Simulink version. The wierd thing is however, that at other times when I repeat the whole workflow, it is successful with the exact same Simulink model!

 

My guess is that the Anti-Virus software and/or the firewall is the problem. But wouldn't that result in more consistent behavior?

 

Can you help me? Is this a common issue (I guess not, as I couldn't find anything) or can you guess what the cause for this is?

    Hi Johannes,

    You're generally successful, which tells me the hardware isn't the first place to look. ZedBoard and your FMCOMMSx board appear to be fine.

    We have seen strange behavior with anti-virus programs when using Ethernet with Simulink, especially external mode. There have been laptops where I've needed to make a firewall exception for Matlab. Once I did that, communication worked 100% of the time.

    Probably worth a try on your PC.

    Random question - when things fail, are you running a C model on the Zynq ARM and *then* reload the Zynq PL bitstream? That might also cause problems.

    Hello Matt,

    thanks for the answer. The problem still occurred after I explicitly allowed Matlab's data traffic within the firewall settings. However, I've been working with a completely deactivated firewall since Friday and didn't have any more issues to this point. I would like to find a way to keep the rest of the firewall active though.

     

    I actually didn't run anything on the ARM yet, I was only programming the FPGA.

    Hi Johannes,

    I'd recommend asking this on the MathWorks forum. How the MathWorks software interacts (or is blocked) by anti-virus firewalls is beyond what we can debug on this forum. By all means, if you suspect a problem with ZedBoard please post back here.
