Xilinux

I am a little confused about what version of linux is on the board by default.  From what I can tell xilinux should have dev/xillybus_32 for communication with IO which is what I want.  The default does not have this however.  When I go to the documentation referenced on http://xillybus.com/xillinux at the bottom it just talks about installing xillybus not creating a xilinux operating system.  What is the difference between xillybus and xilinux and how can I replace the default linux with xilinux?  Thanks!

    Hi,

Let's get things in order, then.

The Zedboard arrives with a SD card containing a basic Linux distribution, which supports a small set of commands by virtue of a piece of software called Busybox. There is no Xillybus support on that, and it has nothing to do with Xillinux.

Xillinux is a fullblown graphical Linux distribution based upon Ubuntu 12.04, and it includes the Xillybus IP core and driver plus a few other things. The procedure for setting up Xillinux does indeed involve implementing the PL part. Once the system is up and running, you may add your application logic to the ISE project that you've previously implemented. So the somewhat tedious procedure for setting up Xillinux gives you the development environment ready to go.

The Linux filesystem is available for download as an SD image (see section 3.7 in the docs).

The two things to download appear at the bottom of the page you gave a link to. The instructions for installing Xillinux are at http://xillybus.com/downloads/doc/xillybus_getting_started_zynq.pdf

I hope this made things clearer.

    Regards,
       Eli
