Ultrazed 3EG - display port reference design - desktop linux?

I've found the displayport reference design for the ultrazed EG I/O carrier.

 

Where I want to get to is: I have desktop Linux running on the ultrazed with a monitor connected to the displayport. I've seen there is a reference design for the ZCU102, but I can't see one for the ultrazed.

 

Is that a simple step from the reference design, a complicated step, or is it just not viable please?

    I'm not sure what you are asking.  Could you be more specific on what your desire is?

    I'm trying to reach the point where the ultrazed is like a standalone computer that happens to have an FPGA. It would have a monitor attached to the displayport connection; it would have mouse and keyboard attached. It would run a desktop version of Linux with GUI etc.

     

    The reason I want this is: I will then also be interfacing HF software defined radio with attached ADC, DAC and digital processing in the FPGA. The user interface runs as a Linux application and presents its display to the GUI. I understand very well the signal processing and how to implement in in the FPGA; I don't know much about configuring Linux systems!

     

    I had previously looked at Zynq7020 based boards and one did have a port of desktop Linux with all the appropriate device drivers. I want to answer the same question for newer, Ultrascale SOM boards. I can see that a frame buffer with for example the rotating cube is possible; what I'm trying to find out is how big a step it is to having the desktop GUI form of Linux. It may be a case of simply selecting the right drivers, or it could be much more complicated!

    Hi Laurence,

     

    Currently the only board we have a Linux OS image for that does what you describe (Linux windowed desktop environment with DisplayPort output and mouse/keyboard input) is the Ultra96-V2.  This board is similar to the UltraZed-EG in that they both use the Xilinx Zu+ 3EG MPSoC device, have USB input, and DisplayPort output.  It is certainly possible to leverage the PetaLinux BSP for the Ultra96-V2 to create what you want for the UltraZed-EG.  Much of this task is probably straightforward, but this is isn't something we have or can support right now.

    Thank you - that was exactly the information I was looking for.

     

    I can look at whether the Ultra96 driver set could move across to the Ultrazed. I can see there are some differences in devices but that gives me a solid start. And potentially I could use an Ultra96 for a prototype for my application: it doesn't have enough I/O connections for the final version but I can de-risk much of the project.

    Hi there,

     

    I wanted to let you know that we are currently uploading the images for the UltraZed-EG platforms for 2019.2.  These support Vitis and have displayport with ethernet working.  Look for them on the product pages, and expect them to be there within a day or two.
