Avnet XRF8 Gen3 SOM Thermal Requirements

I’m reaching out to inquire about the thermal management requirements of the XRF8 Gen3 SOM. We plan to use the XRF Heatsink V2 (AES-XRF-HEATSINK-V2) with the AES-XRF-HEATSINK-V2-FAN. However, we intend to operate at altitudes up to 20kft where there is a reduction in convective cooling. What is the maximum allowable heatsink temperature that will insure SOM performance?

Hi jake8jensen ,

AES-XRF-HEATSINK (and variants) are intended for prototype and development, providing thermal relief adequate for room temperature lab environments. We expect that every deployed product will require unique thermal relief for the XRF module. To that end, we provide CAD files for AES-XRF-HEATSINK (and variants) free of charge for you to customize. Indeed, as shabaz concludes, the small fan mounted on the heatsink is not sufficient nor recommended for deployed scenarios.

Hey Matt. I expected we'd have to design our own thermal solution for the application. That's why I'm searching for the thermal requirements to design around. The documentation that shabaz mentioned above says "Industrial temperature rated", so I might just design to an 85°C case temperature. I reached out to the email listed above and was told the sales team can't assist with technical questions. They recommended that I post in here.
