How to enable PTP function of Ethernet?

Former Member
Former Member over 12 years ago

I'm interested in PTP function of Ethernet, ZedBoard GbE chip 88E1518 support this function.

http://www.marvell.com/transceivers/assets/Marvell_Alaska_88E1510_18-002_product_brief.pdf

Is there any example or datasheet about how to enable this function on ZedBoard?

Precision Time Protocol probably is much less meaningful the farther you are from a proper boundary router. The internal hops on your ISP are far from consistent, especially so with DSL and other last mile delivery.

With that said, however, measuring the variability helps to quantify, characterize, and explain the spikiness in apparent latency seen on the application layer. Is it your homebrew driver? Fair interrupt handling in the kernel? Process management in the kernel? It's almost worth doing for that alone (and rather more so if your performance bonus is riding on where the fault lies). Is this what you have in mind?

It's a rather cool idea to do this in the PL. No, I don't know of an open source implementation. Count me luke-warm interested if you're planning to take this on.

IEEE 1588 packet timestamping is already available directly. The implementation details are in UG585, sub-section 16.4.2. The entire section 16.4 is good reading.

ok, so the section only handles with the hardware not with its use.
I heard of a PTP patch for linux-xlnx but I couldn't find it.
Does anybody know about that or the use of PTP under Linux on Zynq?
    Thanks in advance.

Recently,I have been asked to design PTP clock synchronization on zedboard, but I try to search example,it seems to be there is no project about it.All I can refer to are the TRM in UG585 and the Open Source Linux Ethernet Performance.I'm a student and start to learn Zynq7000 series ,thus I don't konw how to design it and what can I set about to do? Can anyone help me,Thanks a lot!

There is an example application for the ZedBoard which does PTP. If you have the Xilinx SDK version 2014 installed, you can find it at:
    C:XilinxSDK2014.4dataembeddedswXilinxProcessorIPLibdriversemacps_v2_2examples
assuming everything was installed to the default location. And that you are using specifically version 2014.4. Although it should be there even if you are using version 2014.3 or such.

I found it incredibly helpful simply for coding ethernet transmission. I hope it helps you as well.
