How to enable PTP function of Ethernet?

Former Member
Former Member over 12 years ago

I'm interested in PTP function of Ethernet, ZedBoard GbE chip 88E1518 support this function.

http://www.marvell.com/transceivers/assets/Marvell_Alaska_88E1510_18-002_product_brief.pdf

Is there any example or datasheet about how to enable this function on ZedBoard?

Precision Time Protocol probably is much less meaningful the farther you are from a proper boundary router. The internal hops on your ISP are far from consistent, especially so with DSL and other last mile delivery.

With that said, however, measuring the variability helps to quantify, characterize, and explain the spikiness in apparent latency seen on the application layer. Is it your homebrew driver? Fair interrupt handling in the kernel? Process management in the kernel? It's almost worth doing for that alone (and rather more so if your performance bonus is riding on where the fault lies). Is this what you have in mind?

It's a rather cool idea to do this in the PL. No, I don't know of an open source implementation. Count me luke-warm interested if you're planning to take this on.
