How to power up when power applied

Former Member

I have an embedded application in mind for the ultra96 board that requires booting automatically when power is first applied.  I believe in the 96boards specification (consumer boards, low cost, rev 1.0 2015 pg. 10) says that that boards should either have a switch that manually control power to them or boot automatically at first application of power if they are using a soft power switch.

I tried to find a way to power up and boot automatically in the user guide and by looking in the schematics but there didn't seem to be a way to do it.

In the schematic there are two 0 ohm resistors on the power_en line going to CTL4 input of the TPS6508641: R161 and R56.  Usually 0 ohms are there for config. purposes.

There's also an I2C interface to the TPS6508641 part.  Does the part have the ability to be configured over the I2C bus through the OS ?

Board power-up/boot when power is first applied is very common and necessary for embedded applications.  Hopefully there's a way to do this on the current boards and if not this feature will be added on the next revision if not.

    Hello jbattles,

If you remove R161 (located top side below the A in Ultrascale silk) the board will power up upon power applied via the barrel jack. However in this scenario you will be responsibile for the proper power down sequencing.

    Thanks,

    Josh

I realise this is an old thread, but I'm interested in the same topic on my ultra96v2 board, where I don't have Ultrascale on the silk screen, and can't find R161.

I assume there is a similar trick that I can do on the v2 board. Does anyone here know if it is possible, and if so, how?

There is a note on the schematics for the Ultra96-V2 board that says to change the position of the resistor on the JT6 jumper to position 2-3 to power-up the board when the power cord is connected.

NOTE!  Keep in mind that the previous caveats mentioned above (need to be sure to shut down the OS gracefully else SD card filesystem corruption may occur) still apply if you power the board solely by connecting the power cord.

The full schematics can be found here:
    Ultra96-V2 Rev1 Schematic

    Thanks Tom, that's very helpful.

I'm not sure I've found JT6 on the board yet, I can see JT7 and JT9, with one above that isn't legible. But either way, it looks like a fiddly job that will need a professional to mod the board.

I appreciate the tip about powering off cleanly. That's not a problem for the use-case I'm investigating: LAVA Lab automation.
