Creating a Boot Image for Ultra96-v2 on a 16GB Sandisk Micro SD card.

kiranshashiny
kiranshashiny over 6 years ago

I got a new Ultra96-v2 device without the SD Card ( it was missing !).  So I am trying to create a bootable SD card.

Noting the instructions in

http://zedboard.org/sites/default/files/documentations/Ultra96-V2-GSG-v1_0.pdf

it says we need a 16GB micro SD Card. So I got a 16GB Sandisk card, but seems the image is 'larger than the memory Card requirement of 16GB.

The boot image I have is about right as listed in the attached PDF document in zip file.

$ ls -tlr

total 31294120

-rw-r--r--@ 1 xxx  staff  16022241280 May 31 12:59 ultra96v2_oob_2018_3_190530.img . <<<<< File name + date and time is correct as listed in pdf document.

-rw-r--r--@ 1 xxx  staff       346244 Jun 11 21:00 Ultra96v2_Factory_Image_Write_190611.pdf

Followed the instructions in the "Ultra_FactoryImage pdf", But I'm seeing that Balena reporting space is insufficient !

Balena version 1.5.56

The SD Card is formatted MS-DOS FAT.  Tried other formatting options too. No Luck !

I'm on Mac OS High Sierra, and used "unzip", and "Unarchiver" utility later for extracting the zip file,  ultra96v2_oob_2018_3_190530.zip, Yet I am unable to burn the image.

Is there something I am missing !

I saw the same issue with a Sandisk card on my Linux box; however, a co-worker said it worked for him on a windows machine.

If your kit is missing the Delkin Device 16GB microSD card, then you should contact wherever you purchased it and ask for a replacement card. You can also purchase additional Delkin Devices cards of varying sizes from Newark/Farnell. Search for Delkin Utility microSD:

    https://www.newark.com/search?st=Delkin%20Utility%20microSD

I highly recommend that you exercise caution in selecting the microSD cards for your system. Avnet purposely chose an MLC card from Delkin for all the reasons explained in the blog below. In particular, take a look at the difference in the P/E Cycle Rating between MLC and TLC. When you have the O/S file system stored on your microSD, having more cycles is a good thing.

Storage Insights #1 - Why Not All SD Cards are Created Equal

I have a new image that has the Wi-Fi Access Point working. I am in the middle of updating the Getting Started Guide, but if you'd like to give it a try, I created a version targeting an 8GB Delkin Utility microSD card. This should allow you to image it to any 16GB card. The issue that you are experiencing is because different vendors have slightly different amounts of bits in "16GB." In this case, we created the online image with a Delkin 16GB card that has a few more bits then the 16GB version you are using. Most of the 16GB is empty user space, but forcing the larger image onto a smaller card will likely not work (Win32DiskImager will actually allow you to do this, but is not recommended).

The link below will be good until the end of September for anyone wanting to give this a try.

I used Balena, and tried flashing the image on to a "32GB KINGSTON SD Card" - did not work

( Meanwhile I am looking around for a Windows machine so that I can get win32DiskImager )
    Will keep you posted.

Thanks for the "new" link. **I was able to flash it using a Sandisk 16GB using WinDiskImager utility on Windows. Just wanted to let you know.
Booted, Blue LED light up, I was able to access the web page. The WiFi connection showed up automatically. Just an update.

Balena Etcher should work. I was able to flash the 8GB image to a 16GB Delkin card, although it was in Windows. Hopefully Linux works as well. Are you sure the Kingston card didn't have an issue? It might be worth trying a different card.
