Upgrading Ultra96-v2 Pmic & Heat sink

skiphs
skiphs over 5 years ago

I picked up an Ultra96-v2 in May last year, and really enjoy it. However, there's two things that have popped up that I'm hoping someone will be able to answer.

First, it sounds a bit petty, but the one thing that always discourages me from using it is the volume and pitch of the fan sound.

I saw there was a recent hardware revision that solves this problem by replacing the fan with a heat sink, and I'm wondering if there's any way to purchase the new heat sink myself or send the device in for an "upgrade"?

So far I've mitigated this by including some level of fan control in my projects, but it's a hassle to say the least.

The other question is in regards to the Pmic issue. With the recent DPU work being done, I've been looking at pushing what the board can do. My understanding is that there's a 195Mhz clock limit unless the Pmic is upgraded.

Unfortunately, this seems to require an IR dongle. I'm wondering if there's any other way to go about this?

Ultimately, this is a hobby for me. I can understand if there's nothing that can be done, but I figure there's no harm in asking.

We are working on a utility that will allow you to update the Pmic from the MPSoC device, which means no soldering and no Infineon dongle. My colleague ctammann will have more information on that soon. I believe he is planning a webinar where this will be one of the things that he demonstrates.

Regarding the heatsink, we have final approval to sell the Ultra96-V2 heatsink as a separate item. This is a passive heatsink that was co-developed between Avnet and Boyd/Aavid Thermalloy. You can see references to this heatsink in several places.

I will check to see when you will be able to order this, what the PN is, and what we expect the cost to be.

    Part Number:     AES-ACC-U96-PHS1

    Resale:              $10

    Availability:        mid-August estimate

Note that if you do some really aggressive stuff, the passive heatsink can get hot as it does quite an amazing job of sucking the heat away from the MPSoC and PMICs. However, just be cautious that you don't handle it while cranking out DPU algorithms at 250+ MHz. A small desktop fan or add-on fan will drop the temp immediately by 20C, so you may not get away from the fan in cases where you are pushing the board to its performance limits.

    Hi,

I would like to update the PMIC but I don't have any Infineon dongle. What do I need to do? Is the MPSoC utility ready?

We are working on a software based solution to update the PMICs using an SDcard image. That process isn't fully released yet, but as soon as it is I will post an announcement in this forum and make the image available.

    Thanks

    Chris

Thank you Chris for your support,

Do you think that this release will come out before the end of the month? I am doing lpcv.ai fpga competition which ends the 1st of August and I would like to know if I can wait  or else I have to buy Infineon programming dongle.

Do I need a license for Infineon PowIRCenter GUI software?

    Regards.

    Hi Bryan,

After fixing PMIC which is the maximum frequency that I can use for DPU? Can I use 325/650Mhz?

    Best regards,

    Jorge

The new BSP with update capability built in should be coming in the next few weeks. If you send me your email in a direct message I can provide you the beta method that can be done using an SDcard.

    Thanks

    Chris
