Cypress CX4613 USB 3.0 Hub not detected

Question

We are trying to get the Cypress CY4613 HX3 USB 3.0 Shared Link Development Kit working with an Avnet UltraZed-EV Starter Kit running PetaLinux 2020.2. The UltraZed-EV SK works fine with the two other Cypress USB3 hubs, the CY4609CY4609 and CY4603CY4603. However, the CY4613CY4613 is not detected when connected to the UltraZed-EV SK. Nothing appears under lsusb or dmesg. To rule out an issue with the CY4613CY4613, it has been tested with a desktop Ubuntu system where it works fine.

What could be causing this behavior and how might we fix it? Thanks in advance.

Hi there, Are you using a high quality USB B to USB A adapter? It is rather possible the eye is close enough that you might be bumping into a SI issue. You can check this blog which has more details about this type of issue: Solve USB 3.0 issues with this one weird trick --Dan

Do you have anything else plugged into the board? The only reason I ask is because I just read where Wi-Fi and USB 3.0 can interfere with each other. Making USB 3.0 Play Nice with WiFi on Ultra96-V2 Bryan

Since other Cypress USB hubs work (CY4609 and CY4603CY4603), it may be that the Linux device driver for the CY4613CY4613 is missing in the kernel configuration. You could try reconfiguring the kernel to examine if that device driver needs to be enabled. If this is a new device there may not be support for it yet in the mainline Linux source tree. In that case you may need to get the driver sources (and hopefully Yocto recipe) from Cypress and manually add them to your Linux build.

Hi drozwood90 , Thanks for the response and sorry for the late reply; I just discovered following emails was turned off. Yes, we are using a high quality USB B to USB A adapter. Specifically, we are using the Avnet recommended Whizz USB3 adapter . Any other ideas? Best Regards, Joe

Hi bhfletcher , Thanks for the response. I have seen USB 3 disturb WiFi, though not the other way. USB 3 disturbing WiFi seems to be the phenomenon in the article you linked as well. Regardless, there is no WiFi plugged into the board. The only other thing plugged in is ethernet. Best Regards, Joe

Hi narrucmot , Thank you for the suggestion. Cypress stated that the CY4613 "does not need a separate driver for Linux but uses the generic hub class driver provided by Libusb." (see CY4613 HX3 Hub shared link Linux Driver ). Also, we decided to switch to the CY4603 CY4603 . Thanks everyone for the troubleshooting suggestions. Best Regards, Joe
