Xilinx Tools vrs ZedBoard Vrs Windows8

I just received my Zedboard, I want to follow the ZEDBOARD training videos, the labs etc. I cannot find the "PlanAhead" software.

I did not use the DVD (my laptop does not have a DVD/CD) so I downloaded the latest version from Xilinx un-tared it and ran the setup.exe.

I have tried the WebPack, the System Version, and multiple others with little to no luck.

I get several icons on the desktop, the problem one is Vivado 2013.4 - I click this, and nothing happens. I get a dead process running in the background I can kill with task manager.

If I run the batch file as below, I get an error message that GUI is not supported on windows?

I am stuck, any suggestions?

Is there another way to get the PlanAhead SW?

    The short answer is that Xilinx tools are not officially supported under Windows 8, just Windows 7, Windows XP and Linux:

    Now the long answer. There are workarounds posted on the Xilinx forums and other sites for both the Vivado and ISE/PlanAhead tool chains that are reported to have mixed results such as:

    Your best bet is to run the tools under Win 7 or Linux if possible, even if you need to do this in a virtual machine within your Windows 8 OS.

     

    Now to 'PlanAhead'. There are currently two Xilinx tool suites, the newer Vivado suite that supports the '7 Series' devices (Including the Zynq device on the ZedBoard) and the older ISE design tools. PlanAhead is part of the ISE tool suite so downloading ISE will get you PlanAhead. Much of the current material on ZedBoard.org was done in the ISE/PlanAhead but all new material will be done using the Vivado tools as will new material from Xilinx. My understanding is that the ISE design tools last update was version 14.7 and that there may not be any further updates. I would encourage you to start any new development using the Vivado tools.

     

    As a note, you can install both the ISE and Vivado tools on the same machine and use either one. You license should work with both tools.
