7-inch display

Former Member
Former Member over 11 years ago

I am planning to make a design implementation using the u201CXilinx Zynq-7000 All Programmable SoC  ZC706 Evaluation Kitu201D.
We will use this kit to process some data and send the output to a display (should be connected to the board).
I appreciate your help in the following:
1.tWhat about the u201C7-inch Zed Touch Display Kitu201D (http://www.zedboard.org/product/7-inch-zed-touch-display-kit). Does it work (connected to) with the above board?
2.tIf yes,
a.tWhat about its display controller IP to be integrated in the Vivado design ?
b.tIs this controller already included in the licensed Vivado that comes with the above board or we have to buy it.
c.tDoes the above board include a hard IP controller for this 7-inch display?
d.tWith what connector type it will be connected to the above board?
3.tIf No, Can you please recommend:
a.tXilinx (or compatible) product and IP for a 7-inch (or other alternatives, touch if ok) to connect it to the above board.
b.tDisplay controller to be integrated in the Vivado design to connect the display screen in (a). Please specify if this controller is already included in the licensed Vivado that comes with the above board or we have to buy it (in this case please identify the purchase details).

I appreciate your help in in specifying this issue.

    Hi,

Typically the ZC706 is supported on the Xilinx forums.
I will help try to guide you, with the Avnet Touchscreen kit, but details of using the ZC706 will need to be on the Xilinx forums.
    1) No, this kit can be used with Zynq as a product.  However, without modification this probably will not work with the ZC706 as this requires TWO PMOD ports next to each other, as the Zedboard or MicroZed (with IO Carrier board) has.  It would be up to you to re-pin the PMOD adapter board or change the design for your specific device.  That kit and downloads were designed to work with Avnet Zedboard and MicroZed boards.
Here is a link to the downloads for this kit:
    http://www.zedboard.org/design/1668/13
You can download this and work through this without needing the kit - however you can only take it so far without the hardware!
2a) Most of the IP that is needed is provided.
2b) There is one piece of IP that either needs to be purchased or an evaluation license needs to be acquired.
2c) There is a piece of software as well as firmware that needs to be used.  They are provided, except the one Video IP.
2d) This uses a DUAL PMOD connector board.  Keep in mind, it requires two _PL_ based PMOD ports.  You can see it on the second picture of the kit, from the link you posted.  It is the little red board.

For purchase/eval details you will need to contact your local Avnet/Silica Rep, or request a license through the online Xilinx IP Store (you can get there through Vivado when you add the IP).

Thank you very much for your reply Dan.

So, does the "7-inch Zed Touch Display Kit" be connected to an evaluation board other than the Zedboard (with the Zinq device such as the ZC706 board) through the standard HDMI output connector?
    1.tIf yes,
a.tDoes it need any special driver to work under VIVADO?
b.tDoes it need any special HW adaptor?
2.tIf No, can you please recommend any small size display screen that can be connected directly (or indirectly) to an evaluation board with the Zinq device (such as the ZC706 board) through the standard HDMI output connector?
Thank you and appreciate your help.

No, it is not like your TV HDMI.  That touchscreen has a communications bus that runs with the HDMI video.  It is called DisplayPort.  This is the purpose of the RED adapter board, to give you DisplayPort.  Otherwise we would have used the HDMI port that is on the Zedboard :-)

The video cable that comes with the kit has only one chamfered end, unlike a TV HDMI which has TWO.  Take a look by searching the web for "HDMI cable" and "DisplayPort cable".  You will see what I mean.

As for a screen that would work over HDMI, I would think any screen that supports HDMI would work.  You need to put together the firmware/drivers for the HDMI communications of the video.
There are a few Zedboard examples here:
    http://www.zedboard.org/accessories
It is possible that you can modify one of those, however they are only supported on Zedboard or MicroZed products.

If you are really just trying to get Video on your ZC706 board, you should go to the Xilinx support forums and find out what they have for drivers.

Following to the comments provided, is the DisplayPort on the 7-inch-zed-touch-display-kit compatible with any DisplayPort enabled device? Can I plug the touch display to the output of my laptop DisplayPort for instance?

Looking at the ALI3 Sharp7 and PMOD-ALI3 adapter boards, it seems pins 13 and 14 (Config 1 and 2) are used for the touchscreen (I2C) while the DisplayPort standard seems to reserve the pins for ground (source wikipedia :) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DisplayPort in the pinout section on the right).

I am not very familiar with the DisplayPort standard, but I am trying to gauge how close to the standard the touch display provided by Zedboard is.

    JS,

Although we used a DisplayPort connector to leverage off the shelf cabling, we are not advertising compatibility to any other DisplayPort device in any way.
