ZedBoard Hardware Design Use only 16 Bit DDR Data Width on Zedboard

Use only 16 Bit DDR Data Width on Zedboard

Hello everyone,

Zedboard uses two DDR3-SDRAM chip with a width of 16-Data Bits each. So there is a 32 Bit/566 MHz DDR3 interface with a good performance - no doubt about that.

For my application it is maybe sufficient to use only one DDR chip with 16 Bit databus. But I first want to evaluate the performance on the Zedboard.

Ist it posssible to use only one of the DDR memory chips on Zedboard?
Of course I can configure the memory controller in Vivado to use a 16 Bit Databus, but are there any hardware restrictions for my approach on Zedboard?

    You can configure the ZedBoard to use a 16 bit data bus for the DDR memory. The only impact should be performance.

    If the memories are of 16 bit data each, then while reading or writing from the memory why should we write only to the alternate locations [using xilinx sdk]?.

    Also, are there any locations within the DDR memory which should not written?? Because, when i tried to certain locations and read them back, I was getting back '0' instead of the actual value written

    Where did you see a reference to only writing alternate locations?

     

    Which locations in DDR memory did you have problems writing/reading?

    Actually i was facing problems writing 16 bits to memory using the function Xil_Out16. While reading i was not getting the actual valie written to the memory. So, I wrote to alternate locations and then read from them. Then it was working fine.

    Will we be able to write to the entire DDR memory?? Or are there any regions which are reserved?

    You can access DDR memory starting with location 0x00100000 to the 'top' of DDR memory space. The addresses from, 0x00000000 to 0x0000FFFF  are overlaid with the OCM (On Chip Memory).

    I tried that..
    Started writing from 0x00100000 to 0x0000FFFF.

    But, the console was printing the details of FSBL and other details instead of reading the required values..

    What would be cause of this?
