Video Chain Establishment using Xilinx Zynq 7Z020 ?

Hi all,

I want to establish a video chain using Zed Board and develop a video processing algorithm on it. Our university recently purchased a Zed Board of XC7z020-CLG484-1 . But it is not a Video Imaging Kit of Zed Board. That's a challenge i have been facing.

Is it possible to establish a video chain on the Zed board of xilinx zynq 7Z020? If yes, then what are the extra resources required to this Zedboard.
Kindly help me regarding this.

Thank you.
With Regards,
Sofia Nayak.

    Hi Sofia,

It sounds like you could do with a bit of inspiration - how's this for an idea?

Hack open a HDMI cable, connect up to the Differential PMOD inputs on the Zedboard (careful with that 5V wire - it will fry your Zynq!).

If the gods are shining on you, and you have 50 Ohm resistors pulling to 3.3V on the input as required by (see "Xilinx UG471 7 Series FPGAs SelectIO Resources User Guide") , you may be able to receive TMDS input (aka DVI-D) without any extra hardware. Have a look at the Digilent Atlys board schematics for ideas.

You should then be able to connect to a suitable source (e.g. a laptop). You might also need to implement an EDID EEPROM to allow the source to decide what format to send. Look at "Extended display identification data" on Wikipedia.

You might be limited to 720p (1280x720) due to the input SERDES topping out at 1250Mb/s.

As a test you could see if you can recover the TMDS clock. I would strongly suggest you use another FPGA board to generate a TMDS source signal that you can experiment with without needing a fully featured DVI-D input interface. This should quickly let you know if you can reliably receive TDMS at the 750Mb/s per channel needed to support 720p.

The often-referred-to XAPP495 will give you plenty of guidance.

You will also want to give this paper a good read - dvi_spec-V1_0.pdf - just Google for it

So the video chain could be....

    Laptop - HDMI cable (running as DVI-D) - Zynq PMOD - PL logic - Zedboard's ADV7511 - Monitor

If you like you can use my DVI-D output design from my site (google "Zedboard VGA HDMI") to do the last couple of hops of the chain.

Hope it helps - if you want you can email me (hamster at snap dot net dot nz).

    Mike

Thank you for your quick response and valuable suggestion. I must go through it while working.

Ya, I am planning to establish video signal chain using Zedboard 7Z020 which is not a video imaging kit.But it has a LPC FMC connector. That's why i think FMC module provided by Avnet will work with this 7Z020 board.
Because i am a beginner to use this board.
That's why i am interested to know,is anybody work with this 7Z020 board for video image processing?
If yes, then how? Please provide few references.
    Thank you.
    Regards
    Sofia.

I have being looking into video processing with Zedboard as well.

Here is what I have found out...
Zedboard can process videos with FMC-IMAGEON module. Refer to "Building a Zynq Video Design from Scratch" under Reference Design/Tutorial section.

Also, refer to "logiREF-ZGPU-ZED GPU" reference design in www.logicbricks.com for a Linux based reference design.  The Linux reference design has both a HDMI based (required FMC card) and USB based solution (Notice: building this require licenses from Xilinx and Xylon to work).

I have being able to modify the Linux reference design to record images, but I have not be able to successfully build a working bit stream.

    Hopefully this helps,
    Kevin

Hi Sofia, there are plenty of documents to read. The problem is the target of these designs are zc702 board.

    To learn the basics:

Building a Zynq Video Design from Scratch

FMC-IMAGEON u2013 EDK Reference Design Tutorial

    Zynq Base TRD 14.5

and you should take a look at:
    xapp742-axi-vdma-reference-design
    xapp792-high-performance-video-zynq
    ...
    http://www.xilinx.com/esp/video/refdes_listing.htm

Bear in mind that the cz702 has 1GB of RAM, but uses the same Zynq.

    Regards,

    Juan
