Error attempting to link personal account

Question

When attempting to set up my Azure account per the Microsoft startup guide, I go to the Azure Portal, click Azure Active Directory-->Users as instructed. Unfortunately, it says "Error, an error occured. Unable to complete due to service connection error, please try again later." It then doesn't provide the necessary +User Add button I need.

Anyone have this issue or know a workaround?

Hi Sean, I had an existing hotmail account, but adding Azure capability to that did not allow me to use it with Azure Sphere. Instead, I had to create a totally new Azure account, using the following URL, (i.e. I didn't create the account in a popup): https://account.azure.com/organization It resulted in an ...onmicrosoft.com account. Then, that was the account I used to log in (in the popup) when typing: azsphere login This was from the steps here: https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/azure-sphere/install/azure-directory-account in the "Create a new account and directory that are not associated with any other account" section. I hope this helps.. the instructions are for sure a bit confusing in places, but to be honest all the major cloud providers currently have this issue (and AWS IoT can be just as awkward), simply because there's a certain level of complexity in such large XaaS systems, using today's CLIs for provisioning (and often with browser-based provisioning too).

I got to it from reading this blog:

Under the section Getting Started, it stated to go to this link before continuing:

Which quickly pointed me to this link to set up an account:

https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/azure-sphere/install/azure-directory-account

Which then directed me as follows:

"I have an existing personal/MSA account that I use with Azure, and I want to create a work/school account that is associated with it"

This is where I successfully logged in with my personal account. I then clicked Azure Active Directory-->Users and got the error.

When I use the azsphere login, I get the following error: At step 3 of your link is where I get an error "Unable to complete due to service connection error, please try again later." My accounts are decades old, so I'll try making a new account with Microsoft. Sean

I feel your pain. I also got painted into a corner several times during the process because it wasn't clear that following a path wasn't going to work until it was too late. It just wasn't clear what were the pros and cons of selecting a particular path. Maybe it will work if you try creating yet another onmicrosoft account but avoid using an un-authenticated account for the authentication code. The process could use a detailed flowchart.

I had this issue among a bunch of others. I couldn't find any instructions to deal with it, but after a few hours of messing around, found a way through it. I found lots of links on how to get started, but they all gloss over the initial process to add a user. I seem to have lost the thread of how I got to that point, so I have to go from memory on what I did: In the previous screen ( Azure Active Directory ) there is a list of links on the right - one of which is "User" -- under an "Add" title (or something like that) This brings up the Add User screen, but this probably won't help. I could not add a user because my Microsoft account used my Bell Canada email and apparently it is not a valid domain for Azure Sphere. (which is probably why the User screen doesn't have an Add User button) I had to create an email address on the onmicrosoft.com domain and use that login to be able to add a user. The onmicrosoft account was created, but it did not ask to setup a password, so when I went to login with the new account, I couldn't. I had to go back and use my original Microsoft account to go in as the administrator to reset the password for the new account. (from the same User screen that had no Add User button) That original account seems to work for things that aren't directly Azure Sphere. It is all very confusing to me. Getting through "adding a user" took a couple of hours of the 5 embarrassing hours it took to get sync'ed. I should have recorded the experience - it would be a good example of how NOT to do it. However, it now shows up as the first user in Canada. (Ace)

From the Azure Sphere Developer Command Prompt Preview type azsphere login

It pops up a window to Pick an account

select "+ Use another account"

The popup changes to a Sign in screen

select "No account? Create one!"

the popup changes to Create account

type in "somename@onmicrosoft.com" and click Next

the popup changes to Create a password

type in a password and click next

......

.....

something like this...if I recall correctly...

I don't recall exactly when in the process it asked me for an authentication code that they supply, but it did it twice. It offered to send the code by text message or by a phone call. Both times I selected phone call and it called with a voice message that had the code.

Hey Sean_Miller I guess you are using a new account now. Strange, but I got the same error in my PC but when I viewed the Azure Portal >> Azure Active Directory >> Users in my Phone/ Tablet it worked completely fine without an issue. I had the + New user button. Give it a shot and let me know what you get. In PC, In Smart Phone,

Hi Juli, No problem at all! You'll be using the platform for collecting data from your device, or for sending data, and for all the processing that is better done remotely. Also for provisioning and downloading applications to the device remotely, and monitoring them. I've not done it so far with Azure, so I'm only guessing, but normally that's what Azure would be used for in these types of scenario.
