Hello element14! Since our Sensing the World Design Challenge has so many participants from all over the globe, we would like to know more about your experiences with the challenge thus far.

Specifically, we would like feedback about joining the challenge. In one of our standard Design Challenges, we observe our challengers as they blog all the way through the competition, so when issues arise we're well aware. But for Sensing the World, the setup is unique, and most of our feedback thus far has come from our challenge heatmap, as we've watched more and more members connecting their Azure Sphere kits.

So, please see the options below and help us understand your experience of the challenge! Please also feel free to elaborate in the comments section; we want your thoughts on this challenge.

I received the kit and the first week I dedicated it to reading the documentation and doing the tutorials of Brian Willess, Avnet's Azure Sphere Starter-Kit (Out of Box Demo). There was very little information…

With Aws, though, for the maker/hobbyist who is showcasing their services, they have a tier that awards you $100 bucks credit monthly applied against your account. With always running some crazy experiment…

You do not have to use Azure to activate a credit card so long as you do not use the IOT Central I believe. You can claim the device still and use other services carefully...

I have been pinging the servers for quite a few days but actually to make a project you need to first activate your account.

Since I don't have a school Microsoft account when I use Azure it asks for credit card information.

Based on my past experience GCP and others automatically charge some fees for VM and they had a heavy charge during Code to Learn India 2019 (for students) but luckily for me then had reimbursed it with cloud credits.

So, I have not started making a project.

Hi there, please go to the Azure Sphere space. Be aware that the only country currently eligible is India, though USA and some European countries will have more kits added soon. Follow the "register" button near the top if it is available in your country. Please do the registration on a desktop browser, rather than mobile.

How can I get my free kit? The website links and pages go in a loop. Not able to see a page and instruction to apply for the free kit. Thank you

AWS should work just fine. Considering that you need to use Azure to at least claim the board, it makes sense to continue with Azure unless you have a preference or experience with AWS (or Google Cloud for that matter).

With Aws, though, for the maker/hobbyist who is showcasing their services, they have a tier that awards you $100 bucks credit monthly applied against your account.  With always running some crazy experiment, I haven’t come close to spending it or it limiting me in 3 years.  For example, you can make and test all the Alexa apps you’d like and they’ll occasionally have a giveaway for doing it.  It’s a win-win since you’re giving them exposure and not getting paid to do it, but you get to freely explore your hobby.

But for Microsoft, I’ve found the money side to create too much anxiety for a hobby.  The risk, time, reward equation of the contest is upside down.  So unfortunately, it means the projects will be dumbed down.

Luckily, the card is a great card regardless of the cloud services, which makes it still fun on its own and  viable for other projects.

Unlike AWS you can set spending limits in Azure. This means that it will stop working rather than charging you. Ideal for when you're developing.

    Started my blog:

Avnet Azure Sphere Coke Drum Health Monitoring IoT AI

I think another voting option should be:  I connected, my free trial ran out, and the Azure Portal Charge forecast gave me a heart attack.

After your tiral, watch your cost metrics, don't let your module ping without your direct intention, and watch what you click on when Navigating the Portal or you might find yourself suddenly tagging on additional service costs.

    See ya',

    Sean
