Simple RFID reading circuit, and simple RFID code?

Catwell
Catwell over 14 years ago

Can anyone direct me, or show me, a simple circuit for reading the RFID info from a tag?

And, is there a way to make my own simple RFID tags? I do not need a long string of information. In fact, it would be ideal is I could just code in a single digit number to a tag. (10 possible codes.)

Detecting proximity is the ultimate goal, for the record.

Thank you ahead of time.

Information is quite limited on RFID. Anyone have experience?

I don't know how many of your circuits you are planning - if not so many, you might consider a module / modem which allows you to connect e.g. a serial interface and power and you are finished with RFID integration. You can find such modules under e.g. www.metratec.com (this is also my employer so I guess I like their modules... Documentation is available there) but there are also others who offer modules. Basically, the modules save you from having to do real HF engineering.

If you want to do it yourself, all reader ICs I know have App notes including circuit suggestions - these are valid starting points and will get you a working solution even though with less performance and with a lot more work than the better modules.

NXP has some tag ICs in solderable packages - these can easily be put on an according antenna. Designing the antenna does require some HF knowledge, though. This might be a challenge or just routine for some of the experts.
