Surface mount soldering hold down clamp

I found this tool in my internet travels. It's one of those "it's so obvious" moments for me. Gerrit, aka "DammitCoetzee," posted this little gem on his personal site for all to use.

I still prefer the solder paste option, but this could come in handy for fixing boards.

  • This might sound negative, but I'm having trouble seeing how this speeds it up. If I had a small component with two sides to solder like a resistor, I would:

     

    1. Put some solder on one of the pads.
    2. Grab the component with tweezers.
    3. While heating the pad with the solder on it, place the component down.

     

    Then I solder the other side and come back to the first side if necessary. In fact, I'd rather have a set of tweezers that could guarantee the component will not shoot out half way across the room, never to be seen again. And it just gets easier for larger packages, because you only have to tack down one pin. Besides all of that, I agree with you, a tube of solder paste makes for quick and easy soldering.
