Scroll switch from variable resistor - Advice needed

Former Member

Hi guys, I'm currently working on a project in which I would like to use an 16x2 LCD and a switch resembling the common mousewheel. I took apart a mouse and noticed that it uses a variable resistor to operate the scrolling. Since it is a variable resistor I can only understand how to make change it from values of 0-255, however I know it is possible to allow a continuous scroll. In my project I would like to be able to scroll through numbers (up and down) using this type of switch without having to reverse the rotation when it reaches the analogue reading reaches 255. Where can I find information on building this type of set up? Any help is appreciated, thanks!

    Hello Art,

Are you quite sure that your mouse used  a variable resistor on the scroll wheel ? Any mouse I've ever heard of uses a digital shaft encoder. If you google for "mouse wheel sensor" you can see quite a few pictures of different mice and get some explanations of how they work.

Thanks, much appreciated. Someone had a look at it for me and identified it as a variable resistor.
