FTP Setup

Hello Element 14,

I have a project I'm working on. I work for a civil engineering company, and there has been a request for an FTP server to transfer files from computers in the office to GPS crews in the field. I have access to two computers, and one GPS system, one is the computer has all the GPS files on it, the other set up as the main computer on the DSL server for the office. The way the GPS can receive files is over a cellular connection. The main server computer uses some ancient Windows 98, or Vista the Computer with files runs on Windows 10. Your organization need to talk to an IT consultancy. Urgently. Seems the problems are major and extend beyond an FTP server.

So we cannot simply connect the three together wirelessly to transfer files.

Hi Conor,

Unfortunately no, because you're exposing your orgs data across the public internet as well as usernames and passwords. It could destroy your firm, may even be illegal depending on what is being transferred. You need security and VPN technology. That requires an IT consultancy or networking company's advice at the minimum, they will ensure that the data is adequately protected as well as the org's network and servers.

That makes sense. However, we do have to two computers on a separate network for this project just in-case if something does go horribly wrong. We would be transferring files consisting of northings and eastings and elevations. Just points for the GPS

Hi Conor,

Perhaps consider a SaaS app such as box.com - not sure what else to recommend here given you're likely to encounter NAT issues at both ends and FTP is insecure anyway.

I agree with shabaz. I work this area and it is more than one time deal. You may need to upgrade the older computers because of incompatibility. Also the networks may need to be changed.
