My First Build

Question

Hello People Of The Inter-webs,

I'm commencing my first PC build and i thought to myself where else but element14 can i get top advice.

i have made a list on PC parts picker and, well, i have no idea what i'm doing. this PC will mostly be used for 3D modelling

programs, Maybe some games ? any advice at all would be much appreciated,

Hi Hayden,

I know nothing about what games need, but if I were buying, I'd make these changes:

1. Ditch the optical drive if you can

2. Halve the memory to 16GB

3. Use the money saved from (1) and (2) to swap out one or both of the hard drives for an SSD (lower capacity, but massive increase in overall performance).

By the way Win 10 is not bad, so you might want that, although perhaps some apps/games might still need Win 7 (I have no idea).

16GB is pretty good, more memory is better but I suspect an SSD could have more impact since 16GB is already very good.

Hi Hayden,

Most stuff is downloadable although maybe games are different. I keep an external USB optical drive for the rare occasion that I need it (maybe once a year).

Regarding i5 or i7, either of these will give you many years of good service. I think with a decent amount of memory (16GB) and an SSD, both the i5 and i7 versions should feel fairly fast for most use-cases.
