advice/recommendations on what board to go for

Hi

Looking to get into building things and generally having a bit of a play

Been googling and reading various websites, and see my choice are arduino, netduino and raspberry PI - probably others, but what I have seen so far

I currently do a bit of programming in Windows using vb.net, so would prefer not to have to learn too much new - so am thinking netduino maybe the route for me?

Any comments/advice would be appreciated

    Hi Darren,

It would help us respond if you could define the types of projects you want to experiment with.

The TI Launchpad line provides you with a wealth of products and free software support, especially using the Energia platform.

So if you have not done so, sit down and make a list of what you want to do with the board.

From that information we can help you with recommendations as to which solution would be serve your needs.

    Thanks

    DAB

    Hi DAB

Some of the things I have in mind would be a wireless wildlife camera setup and also a weather station

Really don't want to learn another programming language if I can help it - so something I can program using visual basic.net would be handy, unless of course that limits me in other ways

    Hi Darren,

To add to Christina's advice, you will find that most of the microcontrollers use a very simple version of C, which you should find east after dealing with VB.

The IDE and debug capabilities help you transition, plus most of the boards now have a host of tutorial examples to work you into the language.

Given the range of your interests, I would second the use of the Stellaris Launchpad.  For very small investment, you get a very good 32 bit MCU that readily supports low power modes while still having the reaction capability for short time events.

If you think the TI CCS development environment too complex, go to the Energia site and download their free support.

If you go with the Sitara, you might also want to spend 25 USD for the Launchpad Education Board.  You get a lot of neat devices for very little money and it can serve as a good starting place for your systems.

    DAB
