Help with components for a portable wi-fi messaging device

Former Member

Hi all,

new to all this so I'm in the deep-end in need of some advice.

I am currently designing a device for a University

project but with little to no experience in electronics (I'm studying

product design engineering) I am unsure how to choose the appropriate

electronics.

I have a few factors I would like to stick to but if you have

suggestions that do not match all requires they will of course be considered

still. The Arduino Pro Mini seems to fit but I am unsure if it is

appropriate and which components I would be able to use with it.

The device needs to:

Be 50x100mm (this is not too strict)

Have a Wi-Fi connection

Be a web server

Host a RESTful web page

Include a programmable RFID (maybe)

Include a touch screen about 50x100mm

Run all day with only a nightly charge

I understand this is a lot to ask but I'm stuck with my design so I am

looking everywhere for advice. Thanks in advance!

    Hi Michael,

This is a tough challenge if you've little to no experience in electronics. The Arduino Pro Mini only has 1kbytes of RAM - not sure that will be sufficient for your web server and RESTful interface without some clever programming. You could consider a BeagleBone Black, there is an LCD module with touchscreen that plugs directly on it, and plug in a USB WiFi adapter. You'll need to be knowledgeable in Linux.. Also, it won't run all night without a large battery. With the display off, you'll need something close to 5000mAH battery pack like this one, but higher capacity. I don't know where you'll find one, google should help. 5000mAH is an semi-educated guess, you may need higher capacity. With the display permanently on, consider around 7000mAH (again, a guesstimate).
