installing Lubuntu on an older laptop

Jan Cumps
Jan Cumps over 1 year ago

I have an HP Pavilion laptop from my youngest daughter. I assumed possession when the HD failed and we gave her something else. I was running Ubuntu proper on it, version 20.04. But it was a bit too light to run the gui.

Because I want to use the machine as a native Linux, with some desktop, I am now trying out Lubuntu. Same kernel, same versions. But a lighter distribution. The laptop has a small coprocessor, little memory, but an extremely big (replaced by me) SSD hard disk. I want it to have a gui, because the laptop has a touch display and that makes some activities easier on a graphical screen. But the main work will be command line stuff.

Let's see how this experiment turns out ...

Care to explain why lubuntu? There are other versions of linux for older laptops. Was it your first choice?

The internet is not aligned on what the best light desktop linux is. So I chose the lightest flavour of the one I know. I did not want to go niche for my only linux desktop.

For most things I do (build software), I can keep the same commands and scripts.

I've had to make similar decisions in the past. Curious to you choice. Linux at one time was tailored to older computer hardware. It was a badge of honour running it on hardware that was considered obsolete. That is not the case today.
