Would You Be interested in a LabVIEW Educational Program?

rscasny
rscasny over 2 years ago

element14 in conjunction with National Instruments is sponsoring a LabVIEW educational program on element14.

The program will offers basic educational lessons on LabVIEW and the chance to win a digital oscilloscope or bench multimeter, along with a 1-year subscription to LabView for building the best projects using LabVIEW.

The program will use the LabVIEW Community Edition. I am open to adding to the kit, so if you have suggestions, feel free to post a comment and I'll consider adding them.

I think this is a good opportunity to learn about test automation and get some knowledge on LabVIEW.

If you want to answer yes, but you don't have a SCPI capable LAB instrument? shabaz and I are working on firmware that turns a Pico into a standards compatible instrument. Goal is to have: programmable…

Yes, definitely.  Off the top of my head, a useful addition to the kit would be a powered USB hub that could take, say, 5 inputs from test devices with a single USB-A or USB-C to a laptop.  I suspect most people would have such a thing if they needed to be fair.  I'll have to think more about what may be useful.

It looks like the Community Edition supports:

    • The LINX toolkit for use with Raspberry Pi, BeagleBoard, and Arduino

so perhaps some sensing type kit based around those devices could open up the participation to those without access to lab instruments.

I'd imagine that the 'Grove Beginner Kit' might be able to get people off to a start with the ability to easily add additional modules to suit their project.

I tink a robust hub is a great idea. I ended up getting one (below) a few months ago, to have externally powered, beefy 5V delivery to MCUs plugged into it. Also wanted to avoid micro USBs, so the USB Standard B was my choice. This one had removable cable, so I can be flexible with A or Type C end on the host side.image

Yes, sensors for some of these boards would be a great idea.

Note that there are two similar looking versions of that board - the Beginner one has the microcontroller built-in, whereas the sensor one has the Arduino Grove shield and relies on a separate microcontroller to host the sensors.

I initially linked to the Beginner one as I thought it was a neat all-in-one solution for this  educational program and shows at a lower cost on the Farnell site.

The Grove shield based one in the Sensor Kit is another possibility for those already with a microcontroller.

Either way, there is the option of throwing in a few extra sensors to tailor to specific project ideas.

This looks like it has STEM potential written all over it.

I think both lorrainbow  and baldengineer already have one of these boards  so may be able to do a quick test with LabVIEW Community Edition to confirm functionality.

LabView can be pretty handy, but I wouldn't use it enough at home to justify its annual subscription fee. Which makes it questionable whether it is worth expending the effort to go through the learning curve. We use it at work but I personally don't get to use it.

That's what I thought too, until I saw the community edition in this post. Never knew it existed before.

The community edition is fully functioning. Good for home use, and free.
