Two excellent communities are available in terms of user support, available hardware projects, and (open) source code:

    • Beagle - BeagleBoard.org - community supported open hardware computers for making
    • Raspberry Pi - https://www.raspberrypi.org/
    • Adafruit/Arduino - https://www.adafruit.com/

There are other links all over Element14.

First, what do you want to do with your first SBC?

    • Electronics project?
    • Inexpensive desktop?
    • Inexpensive laptop?
    • Carry something around sewn into clothing?
    • Astronomy/weather/radio data gathering or processing or both?
    • Build a robot?
    • Combinations of the above?
    • Something else?

If you are heading in the direction of a desktop or a laptop kit project (E.g. https://www.adafruit.com/product/3065 or https://www.adafruit.com/product/3116 ), I would point you at the Raspberry Pi simply based on RAM (2x Beagle products, in general) and the CPU advantage.  You'll probably be running a Unix or Linux on an SBC and I highly recommend Raspbian due to is huge popularity and, therefore, notable support opportunities.  Note that the LaptopOS for the 2 Adafruit kits that I mentioned is based on Raspbian.

I am not the right person to talk about Windows 10 [read into that what you wish! image].

Of course, there are other SBC manufacturers offering more RAM on more powerful CPU/GPU for more $$$.  Shop and research if you so desire.

Keep in mind, if you learned electronics, then you can learn Unix or Linux, command-line operations, `ssh`, bash shell, Python version 3 programming, and system administration.  Divide and conquer.  Keep at it.

What kind of SBC are you looking to build… Something like a Raspberry PI or something like an Arduino. To ask a different way, what is it your planning to do with it ?
