    Hi Greg. image

Not  related to the Elektroniknet.de contest, but does Freescale have a Cortex-A* SoC of some kind positioned as a communications processor with at least two gigabit MACs to cope with modern broadband?  We were having a discussion about boards for routers and firewalls last week, and the matter cropped up.

    Hello Morgaine

Freescale target Telecom market with its QorIQ family.
Up to now QorIQ telecom processors were based on proprietary Power Cores (e300, e500 ...),

but Freescale announced end of last year a new QorIQ sub-family called LAYERSCAPE which will be based on Cortex-A cores.

First Layerscape processors available should be LS1_A7 based on a dual core ARM Cortex-A7 then LS1_A15 based on a dual core ARM Cortex-A15 should follow.

Those LS1 should embeds following new peripherals : USB3.0 with PHY, SATA3, min 3x eth Gb, PCIe2.0 ...

Evaluation boards and samples should be available end of this year, may be early 2014
    LS1_A7 Product Page : http://www.freescale.com/webapp/sps/site/prod_summary.jsp?code=LS1_FAMILYA7&nodeId=018rH325E4017B

    LS1_A15 Product Page : http://www.freescale.com/webapp/sps/site/prod_summary.jsp?code=LS1_FAMILYA15&nodeId=018rH325E4017B

An alternative could be to start your design considering the P101x family (based on an e500v2 core) fully available with price starting down to 20usd (P1014) and a competitive development board TWR-P1025

    Thanks for the information, Greg!

Those forthcoming Layerscape processors sound especially impressive.  I'm sure a lot of people here will be keeping an eye out for evaluation/project boards in this range.
