ODROID: Single Heatsink Computer

fustini
fustini over 11 years ago

During our embedded meetup at my hackerspace last night, one of our members showed ODROID board from South Korean company HardKernel.  It sports a quad core Samsung Exynos SoC (like many Samsung Galaxy devices) and has the perciluar characteristic of using its heatsink as its case! image

Anyone use one the HardKernel ODROID boards?

BTW this board is great for ARM development and just sticking behind a TV on a VESA mount case or by the TV Check out other stuff here :

The ODROID forum is a good place to find information on the series of parts

Thanks, I remember hearing of them online but first time seeing in person.  The heatsink really caught my attention.

Yeah the heatsink looks like a slice from along extruded section.

I can say it never gets even warm so it's somewhat over engineered except maybe if you are overclocking the SOC

I remember looking at these briefly a while back and thinking - nice cpu, shame there's no native ethernet or sata.

I see that particular version is now obsolete and they have some nice looking new versions like the U3 and XU, but still the same basic SoC architecture

Is your ARM Cortex-A9 hot enough?

I remember reading somewhere that there were heat related problems with some of the exynos line and that samsung had switched to a different vendor due to problems

Also that link is for the next  generation of the Chip not the one in the U2

The U3 has that chip set and even that works yippie!!

Did you try the cpuburn link ?  I have several arm boards that really don't get warm either, but running the appropriate version of that tends to get them cooking.

I've added stick-on heatsinks to some after trying it, just to be safe.  So nothing at all wrong with a bit of over engineering in that area image
