New BBB startup current

knikft
knikft over 9 years ago

From 2016 E14 has new BBB manufacturer (different box and price).

We think "old" modells manufactured in CN, "new" one manufaactured in PRC.

From that moment we recognize new BBB board has a different startup current characteristic.

The "old" baords can interwork with power supply has advanced overcurrent protection.

But the "new" board has trouble. If we connect it to this kind of power supply then we recognize some oscialltion. This mean:

  1. pws charge BBB
  2. in one point recognize overcurrent and redce output
  3. BBB current consumption return to normal
  4. pws normalize  its output

The sequence 1-4 1-4 ... make contignous oscillation on BBB's power input.

If we using power supply with few protection we does not recognize this problem.

Anybody recognize this problem too?

Anybody has idea which part change generate this trouble (capacitor, resistor)?

Looks like the CN old model has "Element14" mark on PCB.

The PRC new model has "Beaglaboard.org" on PCB.

We do some measuring and the result is:

At startup BBB take practicly short circuit for a 0,1ms. If the PWS is average quality then it is too fast to trigger overcurrent portection. If the PWS is high quality then rate this short as short cct and failure, then limit output power. This is the source of the problem.

Looks like the old model has few current peak than the new model.

Then the question is, why BBB require over 2A at startup?
