BBB Group?

Former Member
Former Member over 12 years ago

I am but a newcomer to this land... so, IS there already a BBB Group,

and I just haven't found it yet?  Look at RBP, there's a bunch of groups.

Hmmm... group envy?

OR, must there be a certain activity threshold crossed?

OR do I just not understand what you nice folks are using Groups for...?

I'm easy, anyroad... IF, however you look upon my queries, and go "mumble mumble, ummm...."

then I hereby call for the creation of the abovementioned Group. So there. Do we vote?

As I stated, I am a newcomer...

Best -- L

----------- This is not a sig, and it's probably the last time you'll see it. -----------

So, why partpopper? I moved from academia (biochem/analytical chem) to IT, and started

working in aerospace. I was a "between" guy, gathering requirements from chems, chem-Es

EEs and e-techs, then writing software (my actual deliverable). Perforce, I started working

w/ and learning electronics. I was sorta adopted by a 35-yr e-tech: schematics, soldering,

wirewrapping... lions and tigers and bears, oh my. We became good friends. I honor him by

retaining the nickname he bestowed (yeah, yeah... for EXCRUCIATINGLY obvious reasons.)

Retired, now... 30 years, and I never worked a day. It was a wonderful, fulfilling ride.

    Hi Louis, and welcome. image

The answer is a bit complex.  For some reason which Element 14 folks have not explained to us, and which we have not been able to figure out for ourselves, they have seen fit to discourage the formation of a BBB or similar group, and instead have lumped all Single-Board Computer discussions together separated only by different tags for each board.

We have pointed out to them on many occasions that this places boards like BBB at a disadvantage compared to Raspberry Pi, since we can't gauge the level of interest through group membership, and there doesn't seem to be a mechanism for receiving a mail feed of discussions about a single board either.  Also, the existing tag-based browsing is currently of limited utility because the tagged view templates are totally inadequate.

Anyway, what we have been told is that a new version of the Jive software is being prepared and might be ready around the end of Q3.  Apparently that is expected to solve the problems, although no details have been given.

So, I guess you'll just have to do what the rest of us are doing, which is browse discussions at SBC level.  For BBB enthusiasts this is mostly acceptable at this time, because the vast majority of SBC threads are currently about BBB.  People with no interest in BBB are currently totally out of luck.

I hope that that more or less answers your question.  Perhaps others will want to chime in. image

    Morgaine.

PS.  Please tag your post with "bbb" to overcome some of the current tagged view breakage.

Have you noticed a recent change to the Single Board Computers overview page ?  It now lists BBB, RPi, Olinuxino, Sabre-Lite, 'more'... So I wonder if RPi is soon to lose it's status and join us here ?

Interesting.  I didn't actually expect any changes until the new upgrade arrives.

There doesn't seem to have been any improvement in discussion navigation though.  It is still not possible to obtain the listing of any given board's discussion threads without using tags, and the tagged view is not really usable owing to the lack of a last-post field.  More broadly, Element 14 threads lack any ability to signal which threads have been updated since you last read their end post.  That should really be highlighted as a requirement.

I especially dislike the emphasis on "recent posts" in the SBC area.  Engineers typically come looking for information, and  chat currency is only secondary.  Information content is strongly correlated with thread subjects, not recent activity.  The emphasis is all wrong, and is more appropriate to a social networking site than an engineering one.
