Is it possible to add more RAM?

Former Member
Former Member over 10 years ago

Looking to buy a relatively cheap SBC to set up as a server running a memory intensive application. Been looking at a bunch, but it seems most are limited to just 1gb of RAM. Ideally I'd like to have 4GB if not more. This is the reason for my question.

Any suggestions?

balearicdynamics I just saw the video and the compute module is 512MB Ram and 4GB eMMC storage. Sorry to differ. Clem

Mmmhhh... It's true, and it's a detail I have not noted following the enthusiasm seeing the 4G 1600 DDR ... Sure that this can't be used as extra-memory ? But we don't know yet the details of the project…

Have you looked at the mini-ITX format?

I have, but it's just not something I'm looking for. I need a single board computer for less than all the parts I'd have to buy with the mini ITX.

Well after a quick look around it seems that your choices are limited.

    Cheap

    Powerful

    Easy

    ...pick any two.

I would suggest a small form factor PC. That way you can upgrade aspects such as ram as and when required.

Unfortunately that's not cheap enough, but thanks for the idea. I'll keep looking.

What kind of OS do you have in ming to put on it ? This may change the choice of the hardware.

Please, clear me also another thing: your SBC is nearest to a PI or Gizmo2 (bought one for 177 Euros just a week ago).

PI can be upgrade with DDR if I am not wrong and Gizmo2 needs more engineering to think to a ram expansion

Got one with 2GB: Hardkernel Unveils $59 ODROID-U3 Board Powered by Exynos 4412 Prime Quad Core SoC

    Clem

PS. All these have RAM built on the board. No chance to change.

You can use instead of the Raspberry PI standard the Compute Module Dev kit. Take a look to the linked vide, its price is not so much higher than the PI 2 and can host 4 Gb of Ram and more features with the advantage of supporting almost the same accessories and OS than the PI 2.

Let me know if this is what you have in mind.
