Monster High: Monster Maker

We got one of these toys a couple years back, and it was basicly a step motor w/ a pen to design images to be put onto a doll parts.

Fisher-price/Mattel has discontinued this product, no longer supporting the software that needs a patch that locks the product from continuing to working;

I'd love to reverse engineer this product and possiably make a software to interface with it; i'm also not above just replaceing the existing board with a mcu/sbc and writing 2 instead of 1.

How difficult of a project would this be?

    that is the device exactly, i was going to take pictures of the board that it uses to run it, but ran out of time, it takes a usb a/b cable for computers, but also has a iOS BT chip on it for communicating with iPads; There was an android tablet program as well but all of these no longer work as they require a patch that is no longer hosted.

    The chip is potted, and the version of the board is super low, i've only bodged a jumper across the switch connection so that it turns on w/o the included switch connection.
