Setting Up the Bone

I have loaded drivers on my Win 7 computer but still cant access the BBB at the IP address 192.168.7.2.

 

I'm sure this is a very common problem, the browser (Ive tried a few) times out.  Tried restarting, re-installing (get the green ticks), tried Win 10.

Tried rebooting the BBB, nothing seems to work.

 

Any tips appreciated

    Could you please share the output of 

    ipconfig /all

    on windows?

    The BBB should show up as usb to ethernet (or ethernet over usb) interface with the IP 192.168.7.1. This can only work if your other interfaces have different IPs (in different networks), of course.

    I also pinged 169.254.209.154 and received a successful reply.  But the browser cant access that ip address.

     

    Does this seem normal ?

    The .154 address is that of your windows machine. And it's an address windows assigns if there is no IP set manually or via dhcp. AFAIR there is a dhcp running on the bone exactly for that purpose. There are two things I'd try next:

    a) set the IP on the interface "Linux USB Ethernet/RNDIS Gadget" manually to 192.168.7.42 and netmask to 255.255.255.0

    b) connect the BBB via ethernet with your LAN and connect to whichever IP it gets there with the browser or ssh

    Thanks for the suggestion - much appreciated as this has become absurdly frustrating as it seems it should just work and there are so few reports of any connection issues.  Could the hardware be defective ?

     

    I had already tried setting the ip address through the device manager and just to note that there is no field to set the submask.

    The IP I tried with 192.168.7.2 and 192.168.7.1 and today I tried your suggested IP address.  Still nothing when I ping to those addresses from computers connected to the local USB/Gadget port or when the BBB is connected via the office Ethernet LAN.  I haven't tried a direct ethernet connection to the computer.

    I understand your frustration. My BBB worked out of the box. No issues.image I don't think the hardware is defective, maybe just the OS is not configured (any more) as it ships. Re-installing it would be probably the quickest solution if this is an option for you. Just to verify that your BBB works: you can acces the "USB Drive" part of the bone? (when you connect the USB cable you should see that to, not only the ethernet device) Are the LEDs on / blinking?

    Connecting the BBB to a LAN where you do not controll the DHCP Server is not a good solution because there is no easy way to figure out which IP it got. In your case you might have to ask the network administrator for the leases the DHCP has given out to look for your Bone.

    The Beaglebones (like other computers) have a direct connection for observing what is going on, so is useful as a last resort to examine if all other connectivity is failing.

    It is worth getting a 'USB to 3.3V Serial' adapter for this, and you'll then be able to precisely see if the BBB is booting up and where it is stalling.

    As Christoph says, office LAN is not ideal and may not work due to policies. Better to just plug it into the home router/switch which usually runs a DHCP server by default

    and will allow the BBB to connect and acquire an IP address.

    For your initial tests ensure you've got a 5V DC supply connected and no hardware plugged on top of the BBB in case it is interfering with the boot process.

    It would also be worth programming up a microSD card with the latest image and trying that, since you will probably want to do that at some stage anyway.
