Hello Selsinork (a great name, by the way) Thanks for the response. I guess others share my frustration. You are correct - it definitely needs an easy-to-install SD image for those who like me don't have…

    Hi John

Just got my RIOT board but so far not impressed.

The documentation is poor (no actual operation or user guide - lots about the hardware and changing the operating system).

    I can't get a display.

On one monitor with a DVI to HDMI adapter - nothing.

On a 42 Panasonic TV with HDMI - Nothing.

On a Dell monitor with the DVI cable I get the ANDROID appear for a few seconds then a black screen.

If I hot plug the HDMI cable it shows the booted android screen but the screen asks to plug in the charger (no charger fitted) and then the screen goes black.

I have checked the power supply and I also have 5V and 3.3V on pins on the DIO port so power is good.

For something that is supposed to work out of the box it fails badly.

I am an electronics tech with 20+ years of experience and had no such problems with the dozen or so boards I have used in the past (Arduino, Olimex, PIC ).

Am I just unlucky or was this released before it was tested properly?

    Regards

    Denis

It is a shame, but I have to agree with previous post.

I expected to have to do some poking about and troubleshooting but not at the stage of bringing up the pre-loaded OS.

I plugged in 5V and a Dell HDMI monitor, USB mouse and keyboard and expected the Riot-board to, well,  to work...

It kind of works, but I can't see the bottom of the screen so can't get HOME.

It needs a "getting started guide"

What display will work? (i.e show me the whole screen)I am happy to go and buy one

There is a LCD8000-97CLCD8000-97C available and its supported by RIoT board .

It comes with a setup manual .

    @Denis

Thanks for the feedback, you had lots of points so let me address them..

For actual usage and operation of the operating system, refer to the O/S site.  Here is the Google Developer site which has tons of information about the usage and operation of Android.

Out of the Box HDMI to HDMI video is currently the best option.  If it's not displaying properly you can try to adjust the screen resolution as described in this post.  I am looking into why the DVI to HDMI conversion.

Regarding the screen saying charger not connected disregard that.  There is no charger circuit as you pointed out but the operating system expects one.

If you are booting up, you are good to go!

@Peter - Try a few other HDMI enabled monitors or TV's.  My samsung TV did not like it, but LG TV and Acer HDMI monitor gave me no issues.  You can try to adjust the screen resolution as described here.  This issue has made the bug list so we are looking into it.

I follwed your recommendation and I bought one LCD8000-97C and, well, the result was the same: RTB does not work in Linux. After paying for RTB and the screen, I have a useless Android  machine (I was not able of reinstalling Linux, only Android) in a  box, waitng for a serious linux dustribution that does not fail four of each four times and able of offering an interface apart of serial tty. It is really a pity because it looked as a good platform.

I hope some day I can take it out from the box and, after installing a good OS, I can develop any interesting application, instead of loosing the time trying of setting it in a reliable development environment.

I will follow reading the RTB page for curiosity: I am afraid that Element14 disregards this platform (at least in its Linux character) as a design error.
